In
1992 Andrea Zittel started to make "Living Units" as a reaction to her
cramped New York apartment and as a result of intense studies of different
forms of living. "At the same time she was alluding to the furniture
designs of Rodtschenko and Tatlin from the early twenties, who also
distinctly pursued the notion of practicability and functionalism..."
(Zdenek Felix)
"A-Z
... is a mission to learn more about our values, our needs, and how
we choose the roles we play. ... By leaving it to the collector to intervene
in the interior design of this habitable object, she clearly conceives
of artworks in terms of an object used in privacy, or even privation."
