Exploring the idea behind the collection

The DaimlerChryser Collection was started in 1977, and focuses on a concrete-constructive, conceptual or minimalist pictorial conception. The early acquisitions looked at art as it developed in the first half of the 20th century in the Stuttgart area and the rest of South Germany. But the concept was rapidly opened out to include international approaches to non-expressive pictorial art.

new accents

This line was continued in the "New Acquisitions - February 2001" exhibition, with different points of emphasis. This is shown by eleven new acquisitions by German and international artists: John M Armleder, Daniele Buetti, Sylvie Fleury, Joseph Kosuth, Gerold Miller, Kirsten Mosher, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Ugo Rondinone, Franz Erhard Walther and Andrea Zittel.

three generations of artists working conceptually

These artists went on developing a "different" work concept. This dates from around 1960, and goes beyond traditional ideas of painting. The exhibition includes essentially conceptual works by three generations of artists. It also identifies transitions in design and media art, thus showing that contemporary artists are interested in the border area between economics, advertising and aesthetics.
