A
contemporary sculptor in dialogue with artistic colleagues from bygone
centuries
Two directors of collections - Julien Chapuis from the Bode-Museum and
Renate Wiehager from the Daimler Art Collection - talk about their different
remits. The temporary shared factor for the two collections is a dialogue
initiated by a Dutch sculptor between his own sculptures and the works
of three artists from five different centuries, presented in two special
exhibitions in the Bode-Museum and the Daimler Contemporary at Potsdamer
Platz. For his artistic exchange in the Bode-Museum, Auke de Vries chose
the sculpture "Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan" by Ignaz Günther.
In this talk, he will explain why this figure in particular interests
him, and what links it with his own work.

Drawing
as a process
In the 20th century, the processual factor in the conceiving of a drawing
or sculpture and in its perception by the viewer has undergone a fundamental
change. In their work, the two artists comprehensively examine the interrelations
of time, place, experience and reflection, developing new forms fort their
sculptural and graphic work to achieve this. In conversation with Renate
Wiehager, they provide insights into their genre-spanning work and into
where they get their ideas from.

for example, have helped the classical media of drawing and sculpture

The
eight large sculptures in the Potsdamer Platz
Unlike the previous artists' talks, this talk begins with an evening tour
of the Potsdamer Platz. We will be looking at all eight large sculptures
in the Daimler Art Collection together with Renate Wiehager, seeing outdoor
works by Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Auke de Vries, Mark di Suvero and Robert
Rauschenberg and indoor works by Jean Tinguely, Fran?oise Morellet and
Nam June Paik. Finally, we will visit the exhibition space, where the
architect Roger Baumgarten, who supervised the building of the Potsdamer
Platz under Renzo Piano, will tell us about the integration of the sculptures
into the city. All the different aspects of how the sculptures' locations
were chosen, the technical challenges involved and the pieces' artistic
significance will be presented in detail.
